In fact, I don’t think there will be many smorgasbord tables in Sweden or other parts of Scandinavia without red cabbage. It is a Christmas favorite. In any case, it will be on my dinner table several times during the year as it pairs well with anything. For those of us with roots in the old world, we will carry on the tradition of having our red cabbage as a side dish at most holiday gatherings.

Swedish Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage Holiday Tradition

Needless to say, I think I am on the tail end of my Christmas Smorgasbord prep. Did I mention, I always make a Swedish Smorgasbord for Christmas Eve dinner? Thus, I have had to create a smaller version for my family of 4. That being the case, I still have many items on my dinner table. By the way, I adore it but there will be so much other food on my Christmas dinner table. However, this Swedish Sweet-Sour Red Cabbage is similar to the German Red Cabbage. As a matter of fact, many European Countries eat red cabbage and have similar recipes to this one.

This recipe is a small batch and therefore, does not need to go through the canning process and just stores in the fridge. In short, I can make several small batches throughout the year. Not to mention that this recipe is easily doubled or tripled.

However, for best results, this does take about a month to brine. It tastes better the longer you can let it sit. Incidentally, this side dish pairs well with many traditional main courses such as ham, duck, chicken, turkey, Prime Rib, Filet Mignon, or other beef cuts.

Accordingly, it would not be Christmas without Refined Sugar-Free Lingonberry Jam,Gluten-free Swedish Spice Cake, or even Gluten-Free Swedish Cinnamon Cookies.
