If there is one thing I want to do more of this year, it’s making and decorating wreaths.
Wreath making is something I’ve always enjoyed, and something my mom always did when I was growing up. The last few years have been so busy that crafting anything, including wreaths, was just something I didn’t have the time for.
Not in 2024!
With a full year of blogging and content creating ahead of me, I am making it a priority to do more things that I love and that bring me joy…and that includes making wreaths.
There is something therapeutic in transforming ordinary items likedried flowers& a wreath form, and turning them into one of a kindhome decorpieces.
So, I’m starting off the new year with a simple, charming, and rustic wreath that is easy to make and easy to customize.
It’s the perfect way to kick off my creative journey that lies ahead…I hope you’ll join me!
Choosing the Right Dried Flowers for Your Wreath
Like I said earlier, thegood newsabout making yourown dried floral wreathis that you can customize it to fit the style and aesthetic of your home.
I used dried straw flowers to make thisbeautiful wreath, however there are other flowers that are just as pretty dried as they are fresh that you could use to make this wreath.
A few ideas include:

- Bunny Tails
- Rose Buds
- Hydrangea
- Dried Grasses

How to Dry Flowers for Your DIY Wreath
If you have fresh flowers in yourown backyardthat you want to dry, air drying is aneffective wayto preserve the beauty of the flower for various crafts, including wreath making.
Start with fresh, undamaged flowers and gather them insmall bundles, then secure the bundle of stems with a rubber band.
Hang the bundles upside down in a dry, dark, and well-ventilated area of your home.
Allow the flower bundles to air dry for several weeks until they are completely dry to the touch.
Once dried, your flowers are ready to be incorporated into a beautiful wreaths and any other crafts you might want to use them for.
Now, if you’re like me and don’t have fresh flowers growing in the garden (because you have a brown thumb), you can also purchasedried flowersat your localcraft storelike Hobby Lobby or online.
I purchased the dried straw flowers for this wreath on Etsy.
I was a little nervous the straw flowers might arrive crushed and broken, but I was pleasantly surprised that they were not damaged at all!
The Supplies You’ll Need to Make ThisSimple Wreath
- Straw Flowers in Assorted Colors: You could make this wreath with just one color of flower, however I liked the look of the various purples, pinks, and creams combined together. I used about 62 dried straw flowers on a 12″ wreath form.
- 12″ Wire Heart Wreath Form: The base of the wreath. A grapevine wreath or straw wreath form could also be used as the base for this DIY.
- Hot Glue Gun & Glue Sticks
- Ribbon: Choose a ribbon you love to complete your dried flower wreath. I had this pink gingham ribbon on hand, and loved the pop of pattern and color it gave to my wreath for Valentine’s Day.

Step by Step Guide to Making YourOwn Dried Floral Wreath
Just follow these simple steps and you’ll have a beautiful wreath to hang in your home in no time!
Step 1: Gather Materials & Prep Your Work Space
Gather all of your materials to begin creating the wreath.
Choose an area to work that you won’t mind getting dirty. There will be petals that will fall off the dried flowers and the hot glue can get a little messy.
You could put a drop cloth or even an old tablecloth on your workspace to make cleanup even easier.
Step 2: Prep the Straw Flowers
If your straw flowers have stems (mine did not) use apair of snipsto remove those and discard.
Separate your straw flowers by color. This will allow you to plan the arrangement and balance of colors on your wreath.
You don’t want too many dark or light colors bunched together, you want the various colors to be evenly distributed.

Step 3: Glue Flowers to Wreath Base
Use ahot glue gunto attach each flower carefully to the base.
I liked the look of the back side of the flower best. So, I placed a dab of hot glue on the front, flatter side of the flower and pressed that gently onto thewreath base.
Make sure as you’re adding flowers, to fully cover thewreath baseand fill in allempty spots. You don’t want any part of the base showing when your wreath is complete.
Note:When working on your DIY dried flower wreath, keep in mind that hot glue may occasionally drip from the wire base onto your workspace. To protect your surface, consider laying down a protective covering such as drop cloth or an old tablecloth for easy cleanup. I did not do this step, but will definitely do this in the future!
Step 4: Tie a Ribbon
Cut a length of ribbon and tie it in a bow.
Attach the bow with hot glue or floral wire to the top of the wreath or wherever you like the placement.
Step 5: Let the Wreath Dry & Display It
Allow the hot glue on the wreath to dry completely before hanging.
Once dry, find the perfect spot to showcase your homemade wreath!
TIPS
- Start with high quality dried flowers to ensure longevity and a vibrant appearance in your wreath.
- Create visual interest by combining flowers with different colors, sizes, and textures. This adds depth and dimension to your wreath.
- Lay down a protective covering on your workspace to catch any potential drips from the hot glue gun.
- Before gluing, arrange the dried flowers on the wreath form to visualize your design. Experiment with different layouts until you find the one you like the most.
- Use the right amount of hot glue to secure each dried flower to the wreath form. Press gently to ensure a strong bond to prevent flowers from falling off over time.
- Add a finishing touch by attaching a ribbon. Choose a color that complements the flowers and tie it into a bow for an extra touch of charm.
- Allow your wreath to dry completely before hanging it. This ensures the flowers are securely attached, and the wreath is ready for display.
- While I love the heart shape, don’t hesitate to experiment with different wreath shapes like circles, squares, or ovals for a unique look.
Can I hang a dried flower wreath outside?
I do not recommend hanging a dried floral wreath outside.
Exposure to rain and humidity can damage thedried flowers, whiledirect sunlightmay fade the colors.
